How We Rank Games

Our transparent methodology for ranking the world's most popular online games.

Data Sources

Our rankings are built on multiple independent data sources to ensure accuracy and completeness:

  • App Store Rankings โ€” Top charts and category rankings from Google Play and the Apple App Store across 195+ countries
  • Steam Player Counts โ€” Real-time and historical concurrent player data from the Steam platform
  • Active Player Data โ€” Monthly active user figures reported by publishers, platform APIs, and third-party analytics
  • Download Statistics โ€” Cumulative and monthly download counts from app intelligence platforms

Scoring Framework

Each game receives a composite score based on five weighted criteria:

Player Base & Downloads (30%)

The largest weight goes to raw popularity. We look at total lifetime downloads and monthly active player counts. Games with hundreds of millions of downloads and tens of millions of monthly players score highest in this category.

Community Rating (25%)

Player satisfaction matters. We aggregate ratings from the Apple App Store, Google Play, Steam user reviews, and Metacritic scores. A game must maintain strong ratings across multiple platforms to score well here.

Global Reach (20%)

We measure how many countries a game is popular in. A title that ranks in the top charts across 100+ countries scores higher than one that dominates a single region. This ensures our rankings reflect truly global popularity.

Engagement (15%)

Downloads alone don't tell the full story. We calculate the ratio of monthly active players to total downloads to measure how well a game retains its audience. A high engagement ratio indicates a game people keep coming back to.

Cultural Impact (10%)

We consider factors beyond raw numbers: esports tournament presence and prize pools, streaming viewership on Twitch and YouTube, media coverage, and broader cultural influence. This helps recognize games that have shaped the industry.

Update Frequency

Our rankings are reviewed on a monthly cycle. Data is refreshed from all sources, scores are recalculated, and positions are updated. Major shifts in the gaming landscape โ€” such as a blockbuster launch or a game shutting down โ€” may trigger interim updates.

Editorial Independence

50 Best Games does not accept payment for rankings. There are no sponsored placements, no pay-for-position arrangements, and no affiliate-driven score adjustments. Our methodology is applied consistently to every game in our database. If you believe a ranking is inaccurate, please contact us with supporting data.
